The Most Difficult Part About Being a Teen...

by Devon Dudding

The most difficult part about being a teenager today is the expectations. It is very difficult to balance the goals and responsibilities of friends, family, and school. I no longer have the comfort of always living in the moment. Slowly it seems that I must place my thoughts on the rapidly approaching future. With looming thoughts of college, it's hard to balance time with friends and family.

Many nights and weekends I have had to choose between what I want to do, and what I have to do to ensure my happiness in the future.

Devon,
This is a wonderful time to be young and at the same time, there are so many pressures on young people. Do you have the right clothes, a nice enough house, the right car, go to the right college, participate in enough activities, have a girl fiend or boyfriend, are you popular? Much more so than in my generation. Every book and spiritual adviser says to live in the moment but that is so hard to do.
And I hate to break this to you but I am struggling with the same issues at a far older age. There never seems to be enough time. But I have learned ways to handle that feeling at times. Find something that re energizes you like a run, a bike ride, a favorite song, or just sitting with your eyes closed for a few seconds works wonders. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. . Enjoy what is around you. Life is exceedingly short. Everything that seems important now, will not be important in 5 or 10 years. The most important thing is your relationship with God , your family and your friends. These are the things that will carry you through the Good Friday's of your life. Mary Bohn
